A CHAT WITH ERIC JOHNSON ABOUT SPIRITS, LIFE AND THE INDUSTRY

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE THAT YOU LOVE?
Eric: It’s bitter and sweet combo. Fernet is tough to play with in cocktails but Henebery pairs very well with it as well as the raspberry, strawberry and ginger.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE BAR BESIDES THE ONES YOU WORK AT?
Eric: Sycamore Den (we were expecting that answer). Kettner Exchange and Bracero as well. I hit them both on the way home.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO IN SAN DIEGO?
Eric: Sleep and make the Henebery guys drinks. (Thanks Eric)

OTHER THAN HENEBERY, WHAT IS YOUR SPIRIT OF CHOICE?
Eric: Mezcal, Wild Tepextate del Maguey.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL BEER?
Eric: Monkey Paw always makes great beers.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST SPIRIT YOU EVER DRANK?
Eric: Stoli Raspberry with red bull. Last time I had it was 15 years ago.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THOSE WHO ARE NEW TO THE INDUSTRY?
Eric: Go out as much as possible. Learn and absorb. See what other people are doing and be inspired by the work around you.

WHAT IS THE PERFECT DAY OFF FOR YOU?
Eric: Golfing at Torrey Pines with the Henebery guys.

WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR THE FIRST TIMER AT J&I?
Eric: Definitely get the Baja Yellowtail and experience the house bottled cocktail Ivy Gibson (Old Harbor San Miguel Gin with dry vermouth and house pickled onions).

Go order the Henebery Highball or show this post to your bartender and have them make one for you.

Thank you, Eric, for being a great contributor to the San Diego bartending community and for those sparkling blue eyes. You truly are a #spiritedcitizen.
